Planting method: seedlings. Plant height: 1.5-2.0 m. Distance between plants: 50-70 cm.
Agricultural technology.
The plant prefers a sunny location, light fertile soil, and abundant watering. Sowing is done in late March - early April in pots, the seeds are lightly sprinkled with light soil. Shoots appear in 20-30 days. Seedlings are planted in open ground when the threat of spring frosts has passed, maintaining a distance of 50-70 cm between plants.
* Homeland - tropical Africa. A perennial plant grown as an ornamental foliage, annual. The bushes are relatively wide, spreading, up to 200 cm in height. The fruit is an oval-spherical capsule covered with thorns, up to 3 cm in diameter. There are 8 to 25 seeds in 1 g.
Location: grows better and is more decorative in sunny, warm and humid places. Does not tolerate frost and prolonged cold weather.
Soil: prefers areas with deeply cultivated, loose, nutritious soil, chernozem.
Care: the plant is very responsive to the introduction of nitrogen before the formation of inflorescences. The absorption of this nutrient is facilitated by sufficient moisture supply during the period from flowering to seed formation. Due to the slow initial growth, castor oil plant is easily drowned out by weeds, but on clean soil the seedlings grow well even with a lack of water.
Propagation: by seeds, which are sown in March in pots or in April-May directly in the ground, 2-3 seeds per hole. The seedlings are planted in a permanent place after the end of spring frosts. It is recommended to sow castor oil plant at a depth of 0.5 to 1-2 cm at a soil temperature of at least +12°C.
In industrial sowing of low-growing forms, the distance between rows is 60-90 cm and between plants in rows 20-30 cm. When using tall forms for decorative purposes, so that the beauty of the plants is more visible, the distance between them is from 1 to 3 m.
Use: for small groups, single plantings and as a background for beautifully flowering plants.
